Carry On Singing with Barbara

Dame Barbara Windsor has many more strings to her bow that just the Carry Ons and EastEnders. A grafter for many years, Babs has turned her hand to most things. Trained in singing and dancing at the Aida Foster School, Barbara has often performed in musical theatre over the years.

As we celebrate Barbara's milestone birthday, I thought I'd take a stroll down memory lane with some classic clips of Barbara having a right good old fashioned sing song. And where better to begin that with her performance of Sparrows Can't Sing, from the 1963 film which made her name:

Next up is a novelty record from 1967. Back in the day, novelty comedy songs performed by actors like Bernard Cribbins and Joan Sims were all the rage. Apparently. This one sees Dame Babs take a pop at Swinging Sixties model Twiggy:

Moving on... One of Barbara's proudest theatrical achievements was the Marie Lloyd musical, Sing a Rude Song, which played in 1970. This song, "I'm in the Mood to Get My Teeth into a Song" was written by Ned Sherrin and Caryl Brahms and Barbara is joined on the track by Denis Quilley who played her husband in the show:

Finally, a song that possibly sums Barbara up best, it's called "Cheeky Sorta' Bird" and it's from 1972:
