The A - Z of Carry On Supporting Actors: Brian Rawlinson

This is the latest in a brand new series for Carry On Blogging. It might be slightly ambitious, but I'm going to attempt to do a run through the alphabet of some of the more interesting Carry On supporting actors. One of the reasons I set up this blog was to turn the spotlight on some of the lesser known Carry On actors who nevertheless played an important role in the success of the film series.

Today we continue with the next letter in the alphabet and as I found it impossible to come up with a Q, it's on to R and R is for Brian Rawlinson.

Carry On films: Brian Rawlinson appeared in supporting roles in three 1960s Carry Ons. His first role was as the Nervous Steward opposite Sid James in Carry On Cruising in 1962. He returned two years later to play the Hessian Driver in the classic Carry On Cleo. Brian's final Carry On appearance came the following year in 1965 when he played Burt, the Stagecoach Guard in Carry On Cowboy.

Also appeared in: Brian appeared in several other films for Rogers and Thomas. He played Albert the Village Constable in the 1962 Michael Craig vehicle, The Iron Maiden; another policeman the following year in the film Nurse on Wheels and finally Henry Blobbitt in the classic crime caper The Big Job in 1965.

Best known for: Playing a huge range of supporting roles in television and film over five decades, reliably turning up in everything from television sitcoms to much-respected dramas.

Did you know: As well as being a successful actor on film and in television for five decades, Brian was also a well regarded writer, producing several plays for the theatre and contributing to the 1970s BBC series Churchill's People.

What are they up to now: Sadly Brian passed away at the age of 69 in 2000. His last credited appearance as in an episode of Last of the Summer Wine for the BBC in 1999.

Stay tuned for the next entry in my A - Z of Carry On Supporting Actors!
