Kenneth Connor On Song

The Carry On phenomenon throws up some odd concoctions and this, coupled with the craze for so-called novelty songs during the 1950s and 1960s, brought us some rather bizarre performances. The likes of Bernard Cribbins and Joan Sims made several records during this period, but until now I didn't realise Kenneth Connor did too.

In 1959 he released a novelty record which included the songs Rail Rock Road and Ramona. These tracks were delivered in the stuttering style of one of his regular characters in the popular BBC Radio show, Ray's a Laugh, in which he starred alongside Carry On Teacher co-star Ted Ray:

Years later, Kenneth released a further album of songs. In 1971 Connor made an album of rather odd prog-comedy songs where he sings original Elizabethan bawdy love songs on the first side and then sings contemporary songs on the second side. He compares the styles and differences of the two Elizabethan ages in music.

Have a listen and see what you make of it!
