Carry On Faces of 1972

This is part of a new series of blogs on Carry On Blogging. I plan to blog each year of Carry On, featuring photos of the most prolific actors for each year. Hopefully it will provide an interesting overview of the changing face of Carry On during the series' original mammoth twenty year run. 

It will turn the spotlight on the familiar faces who endured over the decades as well as those artists who came and went along the way. We are continuing today with 1972. Only one film was produced this year, Carry On Abroad. This would begin a trend that would continue until the end of the original series in 1978.

Pictured above we have the most prolific actors to appear in 1972. They are as follows: Sidney James as Vic Flange; Joan Sims as Cora Flange; Peter Butterworth pictured above as Pepe (or is it Mario?); Kenneth Williams as Stuart Farquhar; Charles Hawtrey as Eustace Tuttle; Barbara Windsor pictured as Sadie Tomkins; Kenneth Connor as Stanley Blunt; Bernard Bresslaw as Brother Bernard and finally, Jimmy Logan as Bert Conway.

Of those featured above, three actors (Hawtrey, Williams and Connor) were original cast members from the very first film, Carry On Sergeant in 1958. This year sadly saw original cast member Charles Hawtrey make his 23rd and final Carry On film, following a well documented falling out with the Carry On production team.


Following a series of uncredited cameos, Peter Butterworth returned to a major role in Carry On Abroad. The Sid and Joan relationship also reached a new zenith in this film. Scottish comedian and actor Jimmy Logan made the first of two appearances in the series in Carry On Abroad. He would return for the next film, Carry On Girls, playing the cameo role of camp journalist Cecil Gaybody.
